A first psychiatry appointment focuses on understanding your symptoms, medical history, and goals in order to create an individualized treatment plan. The visit is collaborative, thorough, and designed to help you feel informed and supported.

Before the Appointment

You may be asked to:

  • Complete intake forms

  • Provide medical and psychiatric history

  • List current medications and past treatments

Preparing notes about symptoms or concerns can be helpful.

During the Appointment

Your provider will typically discuss:

  • Current symptoms and how they affect daily life

  • Mental health history

  • Medical history and family history

  • Sleep, appetite, stress, and functioning

  • Previous treatments and responses

This evaluation helps determine diagnosis and treatment options.

Will Medication Be Prescribed?

Not always. Medication may be discussed if appropriate, but some patients benefit from therapy alone or combined approaches. If medication is recommended, risks, benefits, and alternatives are reviewed.

How Long Is the First Visit?

Initial appointments are usually longer than follow-ups to allow time for a comprehensive evaluation and questions.
