Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) Testing
ADHD Testing with TOVA
Objective, Evidence-Based, and Designed for Clarity
At Pine Ridge Mental Healthcare, we believe that accurate diagnosis is the foundation for effective treatment. That’s why we use the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA) — a trusted, science-based assessment that provides objective data to help confirm or rule out Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

What Is the TOVA Test?
The TOVA (Test of Variables of Attention) is a computerized assessment that measures your ability to maintain attention and control impulses over a set period of time. Unlike questionnaires or interviews alone, TOVA offers objective results that can’t be influenced by mood, stress, or self-report bias.
The test is noninvasive, takes about 20–25 minutes, and is suitable for both children and adults.

What TOVA Measures
TOVA helps identify patterns associated with ADHD by assessing:
-
Attention and focus — how well you sustain concentration over time.
-
Response time — how quickly and accurately you react to visual or auditory cues.
-
Impulsivity — whether you respond prematurely or inappropriately to stimuli.
-
Consistency — how steady your responses are throughout the test.

Why TOVA Matters
ADHD is a complex condition, and symptoms can overlap with other concerns such as anxiety, depression, or sleep disorders. TOVA adds a layer of objectivity to the diagnostic process, ensuring that treatment plans are based on measurable evidence.
Combined with a clinical interview, rating scales, and a comprehensive history, TOVA results help our providers create a personalized and accurate diagnosis.

What to Expect During Testing
-
Preparation: You’ll receive instructions on when to take your regular medication (if applicable). We recommend being well-rested and avoiding caffeine before testing.
-
Testing Session: You’ll sit at a computer and complete a simple attention task. The program records your responses automatically.
-
Review: After the test, your provider will review your TOVA report alongside other clinical information and discuss the results with you.

Who Should Consider TOVA Testing
TOVA testing may be appropriate for individuals who:
-
Struggle to focus or complete tasks.
-
Are easily distracted or forgetful.
-
Have difficulty managing time or organization.
-
Feel restless, impulsive, or overwhelmed by small tasks.
-
Are unsure if symptoms are due to ADHD or another cause.
Whether you’re seeking an initial diagnosis or clarification of an existing one, TOVA can help provide clarity and direction.

How Results Are Used
Your TOVA results are combined with your clinical evaluation to guide next steps, which may include:
-
Individualized treatment planning.
-
Recommendations for therapy or coaching.
-
Discussion of appropriate medication options.
-
School or workplace accommodations.
